So you want to expand your network, huh? 2007/10/19 06:31 Karma: 5
Every now and then users on LinkedIn ask instructions on how to rapidly expand their networks increasing the number of connections. Here are some tips that have worked for me.

  • Complete your profile. Add a photo. Make sure you have listed enough positions. List your specialties. List your interests. Be descriptive. List your groups and associations. Let people find you.

  • Join groups. Be visible here and there.

  • Create groups and ask your connections to join.

  • Recommend people. Actively write endorsements. Your name will appear on the profile page of the person you recommend.

  • Ask questions. Be curious and ask professional questions.

  • Answer questions. Show your professionalism and answer questions. Be informative and give good advice. Earn the best answer or at least good answer.

  • Consider upgrading your free account to paid one. You will get more visibility and features.

Feel free to join my personal network and see my email address at the end of my LinkedIn profile page for your invitation.

Hi Matti:

Over the last week or so, I grew my network from 1,500 to over 2,600. I have just over 200 outstanding invitations to people on the "always" LION list that are just sitting there. However, I believe I've contacted all of the real LIONs, as well as people from several other lists.

I notice that some people have more than 20,000 connections, a few more than 30,000, and I wonder how that is possible, and how much time is spent growing such a large network. This is particulary the case, since it took a non-trivial amount of time to add the 1,000 LIONs to my contacts, and I suspect those were the low-hanging fruit.

Your thoughts - and the thoughts of the other LIONs?

Grayson

In the early days of LinkedIn it wasn't as strict as it is now. I've heard that there were no limits sending out invitations, like today. Perhaps those users have grown their network from those days. I haven't actively sent out invitations, but will gladly accept all!
