Online Chat Availability 2007/06/18 10:11 Karma: 1
I have contacted our illustrious Admin on chat functionality. Personally, I'm for it due to the real-time aspect and it's ability to know someone quickly. I've always wanted this feature which is totally missing from the Lions yahoo group and/or not used. With this capability, I can visually see networking increasing dramatically. This will save time and money compared to other communicative formats.

Please let me, and most importantly, the Admin know what your thoughts are on this issue.

Michael,

I think this functionality would be very useful and totally agree that it would help aid networking - building a higher level of trust between members far more quickly than the usual forum format. How quickly can we get this up and running.

Regards

Ian,

It could be accomplished in a couple of days according to our Admin's time frame. However, I'm hoping he would do this very soon since there is more than one person wanting this. Possibly, he's looking for more validation.

Christian..your thoughts, please.

Yeah, Michael, you're right, and very much so!
Chat would be almost like face-to-face networking.
What does Christian say?

If you need a vote or anything of that sort on the issue you can count me in

okay ... I'm not really too focused on this but we do have chat capability already implemented but not tested ...

my sense is that the Private Message System does alot of what chat would do for us and also automatically creates "connections" or "buddy lists" ...

Also I still believe that integrating Skype would ultimately be a better option HOWEVER in the near term we probably should turn it on ...

My one worry is the amount of bandwidth and CPU it might use on our "borrowed" server ... I'd like to see the Lair more "fully loaded" before implementing ...

That said I might turn it on next week if I get a chance to review the configuration ...

maybe next week

In that many of us use and have Skype, I'd rather use it, instead of yet another Chat function...

That's my current thinking ... also I know various forum platforms are beginning to incorporate "Skype Me" functionality so I think it should be availazble for our platform shortly ... I've also posted requests for this feature on the various developer forums that are behind much of our Open Source Platform ...

Let's see when we can expect Skype Integration ... if it's too long maybe we can turn on our proprietary chat ...

Also, for chat to be really effective we need more "simultaneous usage" of The Lair ... we won't know until more of our members actually register ... as of today only about 20% of our membership have actually registered ... hopefully by the end of the summer we will get a better idea about "simultaneous traffic patterns"

Honestly, I rather use Skype or Msn for a face to face contact with a person I want to know better. Public chats are not very conveniant when either nobody's there at the right moment or too many people are conversing at the same time. There are also other issues like the moderation of such a feature...

Somtimes, in some forums, the chat section becomes interesting, but it becomes very time consuming and not very productive in my opinion.

Christian...that's fine. I just don't think Skype is the answer. I rather chat on the forum itself.

Would Gabbly work for messaging? (http://gabbly.com)

You put "gabbly.com" in front of any URL and start chatting away.

e.g., http://gabbly.com/www.themetanetwork.com

I've tried it on other forums and it works pretty well. Although you do have the usual problems of staying on topic, keeping up with the conversation, etc.

For one-to-one conversations I would agree with the other posters that Skype is better.
